PNG to WebP Converter

Shrink PNGs for the web while keeping transparency. Free and private, right in your browser.

Why convert PNG to WebP?

PNG is lossless, which makes it great for editing but heavy for websites. Screenshots, illustrations and photos saved as PNG are often several megabytes. WebP supports the same transparency as PNG but compresses far better: Google's own measurements found lossless WebP files around 26% smaller than PNG, and lossy WebP is usually smaller still.

Every modern browser displays WebP, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, so you can use the converted files directly on your site, in your CMS or in your app.

How to convert PNG to WebP

Drop your PNG files above. WebP is already selected as the output format. Adjust the quality (80 is a good balance) and the maximum width if you want smaller files, then click Convert All and download your WebP images.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep PNG transparency?

Yes. WebP supports a full alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges carry over from your PNG.

What quality should I use?

For photos and screenshots, 75–85 is usually indistinguishable from the original. For flat graphics and logos, try a higher setting if you see artifacts around edges.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Smushify converts everything inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so it is safe for private photos, client work and unreleased videos.

Can I convert many files at once?

Yes. Drop in as many files as you like, use "Format for all" and "Quality for all" to set every file in one go, then click Convert All and Download All.
