Compress an Image to 1 MB
Get any photo under 1 MB without guesswork. Free and private, right in your browser.
When you need an image under 1 MB
Many sites, apps and email services limit attachments or uploads to 1 MB per image. Modern phone photos are often 3 to 8 MB, and HEIC or high-resolution shots even more.
At 1 MB a photo can stay large and detailed, so Smushify usually only needs to lower the quality a little. Resolution is reduced only if quality alone cannot get there.
How to compress an image to 1 MB
Drop your images above. The target is already set to 1 MB and the format to JPG, which every upload form accepts. Click Convert All: Smushify finds the best quality that fits for each image and shows what it chose. Use "Target size for all" to change the limit for every image at once, or pick a custom size in KB.
Frequently asked questions
Can I compress many photos to 1 MB at once?
Yes. Drop them all in and click Convert All: every image gets the 1 MB target, and each one is compressed to the best quality that fits it. Download All then saves them as one ZIP.
How does Smushify hit the size?
It tries the image at different quality levels and keeps the highest quality that fits. Only if even a low quality is too big does it reduce the width, so resolution is the last thing to go. You can see the quality and width it chose on each image.
What if my image cannot get that small?
You still get the smallest file Smushify could make, with a note saying the target was missed. Switching the format to AVIF or WebP usually gets much closer, as they compress better than JPG.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Smushify converts everything inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so it is safe for private photos, client work and unreleased videos.
