GIF to WebM Converter

Replace heavy GIFs with light WebM videos for your website. Free and private.

Why convert GIF to WebM?

Large animated GIFs slow pages down. WebM is an open video format made for the web: the same animation is usually a small fraction of the size and keeps full colour. Swapping GIFs for video is a common fix for slow pages flagged by Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights.

Smushify encodes WebM with VP8, which plays in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and current versions of Safari.

How to convert GIF to WebM

Drop your GIFs above on the Videos tab. WebM is preselected; choose a quality and maximum width and click Convert All. On your page, use a video tag with autoplay, loop, muted and playsinline so it behaves like the GIF, and add an MP4 version for older browsers.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use WebM or MP4 instead of a GIF?

Both are far smaller than GIF. MP4 plays everywhere; WebM is open and royalty-free. Many sites offer both in one video tag and let the browser choose.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Smushify converts everything inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so it is safe for private photos, client work and unreleased videos.

Can I convert many files at once?

Yes. Drop in as many files as you like, use "Format for all" and "Quality for all" to set every file in one go, then click Convert All and Download All.
