JPG to AVIF Converter

Cut photo sizes dramatically with the AVIF format. Free and private, right in your browser.

Why convert JPG to AVIF?

AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats available. For photos it is commonly around half the size of an equivalent JPG, with fewer blocky artifacts at low file sizes. If your pages are photo-heavy, switching to AVIF can be the biggest single improvement to load time.

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display AVIF. For maximum compatibility, many sites serve AVIF first and fall back to WebP or JPG with the picture element.

How to convert JPG to AVIF

Drop your JPG or JPEG files above, keep AVIF selected and click Convert All. Start with the default quality of 50, check the preview, and adjust if you need more detail or a smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

Is AVIF better than WebP?

AVIF usually produces smaller files than WebP at the same visual quality, but takes longer to encode. WebP is slightly more widely supported. Both are big improvements over JPG.

What AVIF quality should I choose?

AVIF quality numbers are not directly comparable to JPG. Around 50 works well for most photos; go higher for images with fine text or detail.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Smushify converts everything inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so it is safe for private photos, client work and unreleased videos.

Can I convert many files at once?

Yes. Drop in as many files as you like, use "Format for all" and "Quality for all" to set every file in one go, then click Convert All and Download All.
