When you need an image under 200 KB
A 200 KB limit is common on application forms, school and HR portals, marketplaces and email newsletters. It is also a sensible budget for a fast-loading image on a web page.
Phone photos are ten to twenty times that size, and re-saving at a lower quality by hand rarely lands just under the limit. Smushify searches for the highest quality that fits.
How to compress an image to 200 KB
Drop your images above. The target is already set to 200 KB and the format to JPG, which every upload form accepts. Click Convert All: Smushify finds the best quality that fits for each image and shows what it chose. Use "Target size for all" to change the limit for every image at once, or pick a custom size in KB.
Frequently asked questions
Is 200 KB counted as 200,000 or 204,800 bytes?
Smushify aims for 200,000 bytes, the stricter of the two, so the file passes either way a website counts kilobytes.
How does Smushify hit the size?
It tries the image at different quality levels and keeps the highest quality that fits. Only if even a low quality is too big does it reduce the width, so resolution is the last thing to go. You can see the quality and width it chose on each image.
What if my image cannot get that small?
You still get the smallest file Smushify could make, with a note saying the target was missed. Switching the format to AVIF or WebP usually gets much closer, as they compress better than JPG.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Smushify converts everything inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so it is safe for private photos, client work and unreleased videos.
