MP4 to GIF Converter
Make animated GIFs from video clips. Free and private, right in your browser.
Why convert a video to GIF?
GIFs play automatically and silently anywhere an image can go: chat apps, documentation, bug reports, slides and email, including places that will not play video. That makes them ideal for short reactions, screen recordings and product demos.
Smushify builds a custom palette for each clip before encoding it, so colours stay as close to the original as the GIF format allows, and plays it at a smooth 15 frames per second.
How to convert MP4 to GIF
Drop your videos above with GIF selected. Width starts at 480 pixels, a good size for chat and docs; lower it for smaller files or raise it for detail. The quality slider sets how many colours the GIF uses (32 to 256) and how smoothly gradients are dithered. Click Convert All and download your GIFs. MOV, WebM, AVI and MKV videos work too.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my GIF bigger than the video?
GIF is a 1980s image format that compresses video far less efficiently than MP4 or WebM, so a GIF is often several times larger than the clip it came from. Keep clips short, use a smaller width or a lower quality to shrink it, and use MP4 wherever video is accepted.
Does the GIF have sound?
No. GIF has no audio, so the sound is dropped.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Smushify converts everything inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so it is safe for private photos, client work and unreleased videos.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Drop in as many files as you like, use "Format for all" and "Quality for all" to set every file in one go, then click Convert All and Download All.
